Accra, April 21, 2021: The National Communications Authority (NCA) has begun a process of shutting down 49 television stations for working without permits.
This is part of a continuous surveillance exercise using the Broadcast Monitoring System (BMS) and the Radio Spectrum Monitoring System on various satellite free-to-air television channels (RSMS).
The surveillance showed that certain channels were broadcasting without valid Authorizations, in violation of Section 2(4) of the Electronic Communications Act 775 of 2008, which states that “Except as provided by this Act or any other law not inconsistent with this Act, a person shall not operate. a broadcasting system or provide a broadcasting service without a frequency authorisation by the Authority’.
As a result, 49 networks have been found as being running without proper Authority Authorizations and are being shut down as a result.
The below is a list of TV stations that have been found to be in breach of the law and are scheduled to be shut down:
The exercise is being carried out with the assistance of the Ghana Police Service and National Security Intelligence Operatives.
The NCA will continue to track spectrum use to ensure that it is achieved efficiently. We’d also want to use this opportunity to remind all licence and authorisation holders to keep their licenses and authorizations up to date and in accordance with the terms and conditions specified on them.
