Highway robbers shot one person on the Koforidua-Akyem Kukurantumi route in the Eastern region on Monday morning.
According to reports, the thieves set up a roadblock at 4:30 a.m. at the Sorkode Dwaso junction area of the road, where police usually perform checks on commuting cars.
According to a victim, the suspects reportedly robbed over 20 automobiles and made off with a total of Ghc50,000.
“At first, I believed they were cops, but then I heard a gunshot and urged the driver to come to a halt. They came to my car and grabbed Ghc4000 from me, which I intended to use to purchase cement blocks. Another man said that they seized Ghc40,000 in cash that he was carrying for business purposes.Other passengers were robbed of their money and cell phones, according to another victim.
The injured passenger was transported to a hospital in Koforidua.
The event caused traffic congestion on the route, as vehicles were unable to cross to Koforidua, Akyem Tafo, or Bunso.
The highway robbers are thought to be the same group harassing Abuakwa North Municipality residents.
At around 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 28,2021, thieves opened fire on a Guest House and a petrol filling station in Akyem Kukurantumi.
The attack comes three weeks after Nuhu Yashawu, 32, was killed in a similar attack on a gasoline station in Akyem Osiem, a neighbouring hamlet.
One person was also shot during the heist, which took place on Monday, April 5, 2021 at around 7:20 p.m., when four individuals armed with three pump action pistols and a knife stormed the community’s Goodness Energy Filling station.
The bandits made off with an undisclosed sum from the gasoline station’s night sales.
A Motorola phone belonging to night security guard Adamu Zakari, 30, was also taken by the burglars.
At the site, police discovered five (5) empty cartridges.
The armed bandits are believed to be the same group that has been robbing commuters on the Akyem old Tafo to Anyinasin routes for the past half-decade.
